Faculty of Music and Performance

We have developed an approach to music education that has a strong emphasis on performance and employability, and one that is designed to encourage a wider response to higher music education than the traditional music academies. Of course, we recognise that all musicians need a firm theoretical foundation to build on, and we provide this, but we also recognise that performance is the most significant driver for most musicians. Consequently, at all levels, we encourage learning, teaching, and assessment that reflect the centrality of performance for everyone connected with the music industry.

Music is a highly competitive professional area, and many students find it hard to make a living as musicians when they graduate. Recognising this, we have developed an approach that encourages music students to acquire a range of skills that will enable them to enter the music industry in a number of possible roles, and still enables them to develop their performance skills to the highest levels. The reality is that many music graduates have to earn their living outside of professional music and express their talent in amateur performance. Our approach should help many students to combine their performance with opportunities to work in the wider music industry. Hopefully this is reflected in our range of courses.
